Hunt’s Mesa · Monument Valley
That morning we went out with one of the Navajo guides in his UTV. Up in the dark, to a spot near the spire you can see off to the right.
It was good. It felt like there had to be something better. So when we were done we started looking — about two hours of hiking and driving before we found this shelf. All of those formations run through the valley and lead back toward the Mittens. We decided to come back that evening.
When we met the guide later there was lightning, rain, and clouds chasing us. Thirty minutes up, through the sand and over the rock. We got to the spot right at the start of sunset as the storm rolled in.
I’m going back in summer. PhotoPills says the sun sets right on the Mittens from here.
